The boards (the book cover) may be bound with thick paper instead of cloth. Colorist Nolan Woodward takes the homage a step further by limiting himself to only colors that were available in 1983. It makes sense that Marvel would turn to Ordway to handle these covers, as Ordway famously adapted 1989's Batman in photorealistic detail in Batman: The Official Movie Adaptation.
